MARK PRIOR SELECTED WORK : "CALLIGRAPHY OF BIRDS"
I've been an avid bird-watcher since I was a boy, but not a bird photographer until our 6 month trip to India in 2002/3, where I found myself pointing the camera at birds frequently. These, to me, exotic birds and the opportunities to photograph them were abundant and it was relatively easy to get close without alarming them.
From the hundreds of photos that survived the editing process, a few stood out as having a powerful combination of decisive moment and compositional design. With Chinese brush and ink work (calligraphy) as the inspiration I converted those in Volume 1 to high-contrast black and white, isolating the subject against flat white or grey space, to emphasize the abstract qualities of the composition, and the grace and power of the birds.

"CALLIGRAPHY OF BIRDS", VOLUME 2
In Volume 2 there's a 'tonal reversal' by placing white birds against black/grey backgrounds, still with an emphasis on the graphic whilst allowing the birds to express themselves in all their glory.
