SELECTED BODIES OF WORK
[in chronological order]
Being 'between websites', the following will give you an idea of my personal output over the last 40 years. Too little of that time has been given to following my passion, but the flame still burns and I've still got a few good years left in me. The world has changed so much in that time and I've gone with the flow. From 4x5 negatives to the iphone, darkroom to PhotoShop. No regrets, and who knows what the future will bring?
It's been a few years since I exhibited or hung work for sale in a gallery, I just don't have the time! (Too busy organising the printing for all the clients of Print Art Photography. :) So, until such time as I get my act together, please contact me if you are interested in using any of the images or buying prints.

"A Sense of place"
[GRIZEDALE FOREST SCULPTURE, cumbria, UK]
The Grizedale Forest Sculpture Residency was established in 1977, the brainchild of Peter Davies, it was breaking new ground by providing opportunities for sculptors to work in a working forest, creating sculpture that would usually have built-in transience, most were destined to be reclaimed by the forest (or the loggers) sooner or later. The Grizedale Residency provided a unique creative experience without the pressure of an 'expected outcome'. Peter embraced my proposal to document the Grizedale sculptures and over the next 4 years I worked towards what was to become the traveling exhibition and book "A Sense of Place".
Teesdale [UK]
I lived in Teesdale, UK, for 19 years, between 1984 and 2003, and for that time focused my attention on it's secluded, over-hung and boulder-strewn river valleys, waterfalls, moors and stone ruins. Working with large format black and white sheet film (using the 'zone system' of exposure), I had found 'my Yosemite'...
india
Mitra and I made a life-changing 6 month trip to India in 2002/3, staying in Kashmire, Himashal Pradesh, The Punjab, Mombai, Hampi, Goa and Kerala. The purpose of the trip was to take photographs and we usually stayed in one place until we'd exhausted all of the local possibilities...
"CALLIGRAPHY OF BIRDS" VOL.1
I've been an avid bird-watcher since I was a boy, but not a bird photographer until our 6 month trip to India in 2002/3, where I found myself pointing the camera at birds frequently. These, to me, exotic birds and the opportunities to photograph them were abundant and it was relatively easy to get close without alarming them...
"CALLIGRAPHY OF BIRDS" VOL.2
PANORAMAS
The Better Light Scanning Back was bought for it's expressed purpose, the reproduction of art, but a Panoramic Adapter (computer controlled turntable) was available to go with it and there were photographers producing sensational results....
POETICS OF LIGHT
There was about a twenty minute window when the low afternoon sun came through a gap in the trees to the right, isolating the now brilliantly lit, ever changing Ross Fountain from the dark unlit trees behind.

bc to ca
This is not exactly a body of work but random images that belong together in my mind simply because they have all been taken in British Columbia (BC), California (CA) or in-between on road trips to and from, in Oregon and Washington States. Since 2003 BC has been my home, CA my second home and (being from the UK) the West Coast of the US and Canada is still 'another world' to me, despite 19 years of getting to know it.
NOTES FROM A (VERY) SMALL ISLAND
The truth is, the camera is just a tool, and the iphone 12 pro is a great tool! It's always with me (I was never was one for carrying a camera everywhere), the large clear screen makes composing easy (unless you are in bright sun) and being so light it's a breeze to explore different angles. The extreme depth of field is perfect for my work; usually a variable that I have to control, with the iphone I don't have to think about it. However, without good resulting images that would all be academic, and thanks to PhotoShop I've been able to enlage these to 72"x 48", perfectly sharp, with no luminance noise or pixilation. The detail and clarity is simply astonishing.
Of course there are still (a few ;) situations that call for a 'proper' camera, but the iphone has undoubtedly broadened the scope of my artistic/photographic expression and I have created many images that simply wouldn't have been realised otherwise.
